Dugger Spring Fling Today

Last updated on Saturday, May 11, 2013

(DUGGER) - The Dugger Improvement Committee will host its second annual Spring Fling today to help raise funds for local animal rescues and families.

Sabrina Westfall, of the Greene County Daily World reports, Committee Chairperson Lesa Lewellyn said the purpose of the group is to help the community in a variety of ways, including beautification through the purchase of flowers or flags.

"If a kid makes the football team but his parents can't afford cleats or a jersey, we step in. We help local families fighting cancer get to their appointments and with co-pays for their medications. When someone in our community looses everything in a house fire, we are there with funds for a motel, clothing, food and other items," Lewellyn explained.

The event will start at 9 a.m. with a biscuit and gravy breakfast at the Dugger Community Center. There will be a cruise-in car show, vendor fair, food and live music at the center until 4 p.m.

Children will be able to play in the bounce house, and there will be an inflatable slide and obstacle course.

Lewellyn said a new feature of the Spring Fling this year is a pet contest, which will judge entries in several categories including most talented, cutest, shortest and longest tail, as well as most unusual.

The proceeds from the pet show will benefit the Sullivan County Human Society. Lewellyn noted the shelter also donated T-shirts to the event and there will be a drawing for a free pet spay or neuter.

Pets can be signed up early by contacting Josh Hardesty at 648-2749 or they can be signed up before the competition at the Spring Fling.

For more information, contact Brock Heaton for the car show at 699-0087; Betty Heaton for the vending spaces at 648-2652; and all other information contact Jessie Martin at 699-9113 or Lesa Lewellyn at 798-1599.

Lewellyn said the first event held last year was a huge success with more than 400 patrons, and they hope to raise additional funds for this year's cause.
