(VALLONIA) - Jackson County Commissioners are pursuing efforts to get flooding problems in Vallonia fixed.

Jerry Hounshel, Commission President, says this has been a problem for years. He says the town is getting a lot of loose sand in their drainage ditches during heavy rains, causing roads and some building to become flooded.

Hounshel says the commission is applying for a Community Focus Grant to help pay for the project that would reroute some ditches and put in a retention pond on the town's east side. He says this is their second attempt at this competitive state grant. Hounshel says their initial application failed for not scoring high enough on the needs assessment.

Hounshel says the total cost to fix the problem is approximately $600,000. He says they should know whether or not they will get the grant sometime in August.
