Bloomington Sprint Racer Dies After Crash At Speedway

(BLOOMINGTON) - A 22-year-old sprint car driver has died after a crash at the Bloomington Speedway.

Monroe County Coroner Nicole Meyer says 22-year-old Joshua Burton, of Bloomington died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at IU Health Bloomington Hospital after being declared brain dead from injuries he suffered at the speedway about 10:15 p.m. Friday night .

Meyer says she believed Burton's organs were going to be donated. Members of the Perry Clear Creek Fire Department and IU Health Bloomington Ambulance Service were called to the speedway, at 5185 S. Fairfax Road, just after the crash.

Firefighters assisted rescue crews that were already at the track when the accident happened.
"Out of respect to the family," Kris Kirchner, the speedway's new general manager, declined to comment on the accident.

Burton, who drove the 04 car, was in eighth place in this season's sprint car sports standings at the Bloomington Speedway.
