(BLOOMFIELD) - The Bloomfield Town Council voted to allow the Bloomfield Police Department to purchase the software needed to begin working with the Spillman Dispatch system.

Sabrina Westfall of the Greene County Daily World reports that the cost of the software is $30,500 for licensed use in three police vehicles and at the police department for the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, Town Marshal Kenneth Tharp noted.

He added Bloomfield, along with Jasonville Police, Linton Police and the Greene County Sheriff's Department, would be working under the Daviess County Sheriff's Department server.

Council member Eric Harrah made the motion contingent upon there being official documentation the Daviess County Sheriff's Department would not come back at a later date requesting money for the services.

The CAD system would allow the Bloomfield Police Department to gather information on suspects, as well as those they associate with in the area. He also noted there would be an alert if police had dealt with the subject in the past and if they had encountered a weapon with the individual.

Tharp added dispatchers would take initial information from the original call and would enter it onto an information card. That information would then be sent directly to the computers in the patrol cars.

Also, any happenings throughout the day and night would be immediately available to officers once they were back on duty.

"It's a wonderful tool," Tharp told the council.

He added the town would have to gravitate toward the electronic dispatching system in the future anyway, but by doing so now it would be easier to train with other local police departments.
