(WASHINGTON) - The North Daviess Schools Relay for Life team and Friends for Animals, a local not-for-profit charity that helps local animals in need, have joined forces to organize Bark for Life Saturday in East Side Park from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
"This is a family event for our four-legged friends," said Georgina Williams, president of Friends for Animals.
Lindsay Owens, of the Washington Times-Herald reports, the event will feature a 5k run and a one mile dog and family walk. Registration for both events will begin at 2 p.m. with the 5k beginning at 4 p.m. and the one mile walk at 5 p.m. Cost for the 5k is $30 and $20 for the walk. All dogs must be on leashes.
There will be a silent auction, games and several activities for kids including making sun catchers and derby hats. Crimson the Clown will also be on hand doing face painting. Pizza from Papa John's and turkey strips will also be available for purchase. Pet portraits will be taken by Jennifer Catt of Catt Photography.
Several pet contests, including the pet lookalike contest and most unusual pet, will be held after the opening ceremonies at 3 p.m. "This is the first year for the event and we are really excited to get our name out there and help raise funds for local animals in need," said event organizer Monika Glade.
Friends for Animals is organized and run by a group of individuals who volunteer their time for the dogs and cats in the community.
"Our organization promotes spaying and neutering pets to help control the pet population and keep animals from filling our shelters," said Glade.
The group transports dogs and cats all over the country to rescues that help them find homes and also helps with local adoptions and animal health education including the importance of heartworm prevention and rabies vaccinations.
"We are always rescuing and placing dogs and cats in forever homes," said Williams. "We have a foster program for both dogs and cats that is wonderful and we do whatever is necessary for the animals well-being until they are adopted whether it's shots or grooming or anything in between.
