(INDIANAPOLIS) - A Needmore limestone sculptor who has worked on projects at the National Cathedral and Iowa State Capitol will create the 2013 Indiana Governor’s Arts Awards.
The Indiana Arts Commission announced Monday it had selected William Galloway to craft the awards, which will feature limestone carved into thin, dancer-like figures.
Galloway has worked with Indiana limestone since the 1980s. He was taught the trade in Ellettsville at Bybee Stone, where the likes of Clarence Hayes, Henry Morris and Jeff Leitz taught Galloway the art more than 20 years ago.
His original carvings have been shipped around the world but his most proud pieces is of Mary, mother of Jesus, which stands at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church on Ind. 46 west of Bloomington near Ellettsville.
Galloway's work can also be seen in Bryan Park in Bloomington (the 11-foot long dragon); Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis (a bison); at People's Park in Bloomington (a bench); and in Bedford at the corner of 15th and M streets (Monroe Shine sign).
This is the 40th year for the Governor's Arts Awards. The 2013 recipients will be honored this fall during an awards program at the Carmel Center for the Performing Arts.
Previous winners include opera singer Sylvia McNair, author Kurt Vonnegut Jr., concert violinist Joshua Bell, singer Crystal Gayle and actor Karl Malden.
