Watershed Coordinator To Host Equine Workshop

Last updated on Sunday, April 28, 2013

(SWITZ CITY) - There will be a free Equine Workshop at the Greene County 4-H Fairgrounds May 4 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Sabrina Westfall, of the Greene County Daily World reports, the workshop is being conducted by the Plummer/Richland Creek Watershed Project's 319 grant, according to grant coordinator Adam Grossman.

"The 319 grant is what started this first of its kind workshop. There are many horse owners in the watershed, and horses affect water quality. Not just our water quality, but the quality of the horses water also," Grossman explained.

The 319 grant is a branch off of the Clean Waters Act, Section 319. Grossman's position is funded through the 319 grant, and he has used the grant funds to work with local students to put into place a plan for the Plummer/Richland Creek Watersheds.

Grossman said the workshop is open to current and prospective horse owners, and will discuss the challenges equine owners often face.

"Owners are faced with challenges every day, and we hope to help them with those as much as possible," Grossman said.

He added the workshop will be both educational and fun.

Those who attend will learn about the importance of watershed and the issues that can be associated with it, such as E. Coli issues.

Horse owners can also be affected by erosion caused by the watershed.

"There is a great need for education in the watershed, along with awareness of upcoming programs. There will be a little something for everyone at this workshop, from beginners to seasoned professionals," Grossman said. "We also have 3 speakers lined up to talk about things like, equine health, grazing and pasture management, safety, and water quality."

Along with the educational aspect of the workshop, there will be several door prizes given away throughout the event.

Grossman said the door prizes were donated by Rural King, Orschelns, and McKinely's.
Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC donated funds for the organizers to provide refreshments during the event.
