(STATEHOUSE) - House Representative Steve Davisson (R-Salem) authored House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 29 urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the part of Indiana State Road 56 and U.S. Highway 150 that converge as a single roadway between Paoli and French Lick as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway.
The resolution passed out of the House unanimously on Monday.
"Vietnam veterans served in an unpopular war, and I feel that, sadly, they have become our nation's unknown veterans," said Rep. Davisson. "Although this is a small token of Hoosier appreciation for our Vietnam veterans, I feel that this honor is necessary."
From 1963 until 1971, the United States was involved in the Vietnam War making it our nation's longest war. Over those eight years, 187,600 men and women from Indiana served in the Vietnam War, of those, 1,534 lost their lives.
"Regardless of the conflict, it is important to remember that our soldiers are fighting to uphold democracy and freedom, sometimes paying the ultimate sacrifice," said Rep. Davisson. "Vietnam veterans deserve our upmost respect and admiration for their service to our country."
HCR 29 has been referred to the Senate with Senator Richard D. Young (D-Milltown) as a sponsor.
