Salem Mayor Declares April Month Of The Military Child

Last updated on Saturday, April 6, 2013

(SALEM) - According to a proclamation signed by Salem Mayor David Bower Monday morning, more than 21,000 of Indiana’s children have been directly affected by the military deployment of at least one of their parents.

"These children and youth are a source of pride and honor to us all and it is only fitting that we take time to recognize their contributions, celebrate their spirit and let our men and women in uniform know that while they are taking care of us, we are taking care of their children and youth," reads a section of the proclamation.

Kate Wehlann, of the Leader-Democrat reports, with his signature, Bower named April "The Month of the Military Child," starting a "month-long salute to military children and youth" in the community.

"It's important to realize families are affected when soldiers go off to protect our freedom," said Bower. "Sometimes, positively. It's an honor to have family serving our country. Sometimes we have soldiers lost in combat and that affects children, also. We want to recognize they are part of keeping the peace."
