(MITCHELL) - Come June 1, all homes and businesses in the city of Mitchell will be required to display house numbers in an effort to aid the work of emergency responders.
The city council passed an ordinance governing the display of house numbers.
Krystal Shetler of the Times-Mail reports that property owners will be required to:
- Display Arabic numerals with a minimum height of 4 inches each.
- Each number must be legible from the street and made of weather-proof material that is either reflective or of contrasting colors to make it easy to read and stand out from the home.
- If a mailbox or post is used, then 3-inch letters are permissible.
Councilman Matt England, who also serves as a Mitchell police officer, explained the increased need for numbers on homes and businesses, especially on a 911 call. England says without the numbers, it takes longer to find the home.
Homes and businesses must become compliant by June 1. Written warnings will be issued for non-compliance on the first offense. The second offense is subject to a $10 fine, and subsequent offenses can cost $20 each.
