Mitchell Amends Land Lease For Well Field Operation

Last updated on Monday, April 22, 2013

(MITCHELL) - The city of Mitchell’s Board of Public Works and Safety amended the land lease that allows its well field to operate.

Krystal Shetler of the Times-Mail reports that when the city constructed the well field to replace its water intake option, using ground water instead of surface water from the White River, it entered into a 99-year lease with the Cessna family of Mitchell to utilize farm land on the north side of the White River.

At the time, it was estimated the well field would require the use of 6 acres of land. The lease provided $2,000 an acre each year for the use of that land. However, since the wells were built, the city has used an additional 3.437 acres of land for a total of 9.437 acres, according to Mitchell Mayor Gary Pruett.

The board unanimously approved the amended lease, meaning the city would pay $18,874 annually instead of the $12,000 it was previously paying.

The next regularly scheduled board of works meeting is set for 4 p.m. April 30 at City Hall.
