(HUNTINGBURG) - At approximately 7:42 p.m. Saturday the Indiana State Police troopers were called to a one vehicle crash on Meridian Road just South of County Road 100S where five people were injured, one seriously, and the driver was arrested for operating a vehicle while under the influence of marijuana.
According to a ISP press release, 18-year-old Hector Vazquez Jr, of Huntingburg was driving a red 1996 Honda Civic southbound on Meridian Road at a high rate of speed.
As he attempted to negotiate a curve he lost control and left the roadway striking a tree. Due to the high rate of speed the vehicle continued and hit another tree and then traveled back onto the roadway.
All five occupants were injured however the passenger in the middle of the back seat, 13-year-old Myra Arellano, of Huntingburg was flown to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment of life threatening injuries.
All the others injured were:
23-year-old Trenton Torres, 23, of Huntingburg, front seat passenger, wearing seatbelt
12-year-old Karolina Lopez, of Huntingburg, right rear passenger, not wearing seatbelt
13-year-old Myra Arellano, of Huntingburg, middle rear passenger, not wearing seatbelt
22-year-old Ernesto Chavez, of Huntingburg, left rear passenger, not wearing seatbelt
They were taken to Jasper Memorial by ambulance for treatment of minor injuries.
A preliminary test revealed Vazquez was under the influence of THC the active ingredient in marijuana. He was arrested and taken to the Dubois County Security Center.
He faces a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He was cited for speed to fast to avoid a collision and driving left of center.
