(PAOLI) - The understanding of hemp and its uses can be difficult and questionable. But Stacey Burkhart, founder of the local business Eight Trees Company, is looking to educate as many people as she can on the benefits of products made from the hemp plant.
Today at 2 p.m., Burkhart will host a demonstration at Lost River Market and Deli on the benefits of products made from hemp.
Customers attending the event will:
-- Learn about the health benefits of hemp products;
-- Sample a spring mix salad made with apples, avocado, and a Balsamic vinegar/hemp seed oil dressing;
-- Taste hemp protein, both as a shake and in the form of a truffle;
-- Experience fabrics and yarn made from hemp fibers;
-- Sample Eight Trees Company products with hemp seed oil as a valuable ingredient, and
-- Enjoy a sweet treat made from hemp seeds.
Burkhart and her husband, Dennis, reside in West Baden Springs. Last year, when Stacey learned she was pregnant, she began researching goods she could make for her daughter, Octavia, now 8 months old. Burkhart began with making her own wipes, and followed up with hand-whipped baby oil.
After researching the benefits of coconut oil, Burkhart began looking into other cold-pressed oils, and one product really stood out. "Hemp seed oil has so many skin benefits," Burkhart said. "It is non-greasy, which is especially helpful for moms using cloth diapers. It has anti-inflammatory properties, and makes a great moisturizer."
Burkhart started digging deeper to learn more about the products made from hemp. She now uses hemp seed oil as a salad dressing, makes a hemp protein shake for breakfast, and sews with fabrics made from hemp.
The knowledge Burkhart earned from researching products for her daughter led her to open Eight Trees Company. The business is named for her daughter, Octavia Laura. Octavia means "the Eighth Tree." Stacey jokes that her daughter is the boss of this mother/daughter operation. Her hope is that Eight Trees Company will continue to prosper as a part of her daughter's life.
