(INDIANAPOLIS) - Alecia Edmonson of Jasonville was presented with the WorkOne Achievement Award last week for overcoming several employment barriers and pursuing a better life for herself. She received the award this week in a ceremony at the Indiana Statehouse.

When Edmonson first came into WorkOne, she was a single mother with some college credit looking for work to support her family. The staff at WorkOne was able to assist her with finding a job through the Young Hoosiers Conservation Corps summer employment program.

When Edmonson decided to return to college to pursue a degree in nursing, she again turned to WorkOne for assistance. She received occupational skills training, financial assistance and academic and career counseling from WorkOne.

Edmonson graduated with an Associate's Degree in Nursing. Through WorkOne job search assistance, she was able to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse and was hired by Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

"Alecia now works in the Intermediate Care Unit of the hospital and is yet another example of how individual resolve and collaboration with WorkOne can build new skills for a new start in life," said Scott B. Sanders, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development awarded 12 individuals with WorkOne Achievement Awards for their outstanding accomplishments while participating in the workforce development system. Twelve awards were also presented to employers who partner with WorkOne for their contribution to growing Indiana's economy and commitment to their community. Awards were also presented to an individual and employer for their participation in the Hoosier Initiative for Re-Entry (HIRE) program. The HIRE program is a collaborative effort between WorkOne, the Indiana Department of Corrections and participating Indiana employers to educate, train and successfully transition eligible ex-offenders from incarceration back into society and employment.
