(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Soil & Water Conservation District encourages residents to celebrate Earth Day as a way to better understand the importance of protecting natural resources and the environment.

Earth Day has been celebrated since 1970, and thousands of projects have been completed to help better our Earth.

This year, Earth Day will be celebrated April 22, the district reports.

Earth Day is a time for citizens to focus on the environment and the significance of keeping it clean and safe for today and for future generations.

Planting trees or flowers, picking up trash, using less energy are just a few ways to celebrate Earth Day this year.

Arbor Day follows quickly on April 26. Arbor Day began in 1872 when an estimated 1 million trees were planted in the United States. Trees are an extremely important part of our lives offering us shade, wood, paper products, and clean air.

Please participate in the Arbor Day celebration and plant a tree this spring. If you have any questions about these celebrations feel free to contact the Lawrence County Soil & Water Office at 279-8117, ext. 3.
