Columbus Planning For Mill Race Marathon

Last updated on Saturday, April 20, 2013

(COLUMBUS) - After the events that took place at the Boston Marathon, many communities that hold similar events are rethinking their security plans.

In Columbus, the inaugural Mill Race Marathon is set for September 28.

Columbus Police Chief Jason Maddix says that due to the size of this event, the number of participants and spectators and the sheer size of the area being covered, Columbus Police will be partnering with the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department, Indiana State Police and the Bartholomew County Emergency Management Agency to secure everyone involved.

He added that they are also learning from events such as the terrorist plot in Boston to better protect the local populace. Maddix says that all security measures will be finalized closer to the date of the race.

Maddix also urged drivers to be aware of the race. While he says police would prefer residents not drive during the marathon, he says motorists will be able to get around Columbus. Motorists may find it slow going from roughly 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the day of the race. Maddix says the key will be driver attentiveness and patience.
