Charges Dropped Against Student Who Tweeted Threat

Last updated on Thursday, April 18, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - Interim IU Police Chief Laury Flint says the charges against Alex Carlisle, the IDS opinion columnist arrested last week, were dropped.

Flint says the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office opted not to file charges at the request of IU Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel, who Carlisle allegedly threatened in a tweet last Thursday. He had initially faced preliminary charges of intimidation, a class-B felony.

Carlisle allegedly tweeted "Kill Provost Robel" alongside a retweet of an @IUonStrike post. In his interview with officers, Carlisle says he was being sarcastic and did not intend the tweet as a threat.

His Twitter account is no longer active. IDS editors are still reviewing the situation to determine if Carlisle violated the IDS Code of Ethics or employment agreement..
