Last updated on Saturday, April 6, 2013

(BEDFORD) - BNL Head Coach Kurt Godlevske has been named the 2013 Indiana Basketball Coaches Association District 3 Coach of the Year.

Jeff Bartlett of the Times-Mail reports that Godlevske views basketball as an ultimate team sport, and that includes coaching awards, which have piled up at the end of his seventh season at BNL after leading the Lady Stars to the 2012-13 Class 4A state championship and an undefeated (28-0) record. The IBCA joins the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association (ICGSA) Class 4A Coach of the Year and Hoosier Hills Conference Coach of the Year on his list of honors this season.

Not only were his current Lady Stars Indiana state champions, but also reached as high as No.19 in the USA Today Super 25 national rankings.

Godlevske has coached the Lady Stars for seven seasons, compiling a 120-41 record with two sectional titles as well as one regional and one semistate crown.

His overall record as a head coach is 177-116. Before taking over the BNL girls, Godlevske was a men's basketball assistant coach from 1994-96 at Lake Superior State University (Mich.), a boys' head coach at L'Anse High School (Mich.) from 2000-02, a boys' assistant at Lawrence North in Indianapolis for Jack Keefer in 2003-04 and simultaneously was the boys' and girls' head coach at Newberry High School (Mich.) from 2004-06.

Godlevske was Copper Country Conference Coach of the Year in 2002 and Hoosier Hills Conference Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.

Godlevske was raised in Bedford but moved to Michigan as a teenager and is a 1989 graduate of L'Anse High School. He attended Northern Michigan University, where he earned the team's Sixth Man Award in 1992, its MVP award in 1993 and collected Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference all-conference and all-tournament honors in 1993-94.

He earned his master's degree from the University of Indianapolis in 2004 and added an administrator's license from Oakland City University in 2008. Godlevske currently is principal at Dollens Elementary School in the North Lawrence Community Schools system.

And he's one of the top basketball coaches in the hoops-crazy Hoosier state.
