Bloomington Partners With Area 10 Agency On Aging To Prevent Suicide

Last updated on Thursday, April 18, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington’s Community and Family Resources Department and the Area 10 Agency on Aging invite the local community to “Suicide Prevention from Different Perspectives.”

This program will be held at City Hall on Saturday, April 20 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The goal of the "Suicide Prevention from Different Perspectives" program is to bring more awareness of and education about suicide prevention, and to provide family members, friends and caregivers with valuable and resourceful information that addresses the public health issue of suicide.

The event will feature presentations by health professionals with expertise in suicide prevention, awareness and advocacy. Exhibitors from local agencies will be on hand providing suicide prevention resources. The target audiences for this year's event are youth, middle-aged adults and older adults, although suicide prevention efforts are important at any age.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death among Americans for all ages. It has been reported that more than 34,000 people kill themselves each year and more than 376,000 people with self-inflicted injuries are treated in emergency rooms annually. The act of suicide affects everyone: the survivor, family, friends and the community.
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
