(BLOOMINGTON) - Google Summer of Code selected Bloomington as a participant for a second year.
Bloomington will be participating as a mentoring organization to student programmers through the company's Summer of Code Initiative.
Bloomington was the first city government establishment to participate in Google Summer of Code in 2012.
"Being included once again as a Google Summer of Code organization is recognition that Bloomington continues to be an innovator and civic leader in the use of production of open source software," Rick Dietz, the city's information and technology services director, said in a news release.
The Google Summer of Code program awards stipends to hundreds of student around the world, in order to develop open-source tools for chosen mentoring organizations, according to the release.
Students are paired with a mentor from participating organizations giving students exposure to real-world software development scenarios and the chance for professional mentoring in areas related to their academic interests, according to a news release.
Other selected organizations include CERN, Code for America, Apache Software Foundation, GNU, Creative Commons, KDE, Mozilla, LibreOffice, Linux Foundation, Twitter and Wikimedia Foundation.
Proposed city projects include developing new features for the City's GeoReporter App for Google Android and Apple iOS platforms, as well as for the city's uReport issue reporting and citizen relationship management system, according to the release.
Students are able to suggest project ideas, and applications will be available beginning Monday.
