(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington firefighters are rebuilding weathered signs featuring the image of an Indiana University student who vanished nearly two years ago.
The 20 large, wooden-framed signs were erected after Lauren Spierer vanished.
Members of the Bloomington Fire Department's Station 2, including senior driver Lee Chapman, Sgt. Aaron Butcher, Capt. Nick Teeters and BFD's battalion chief of training Steve Coover, have been in contact with Lauren's parents, Charlene and Robert Spierer.
Firefighters are also hanging new posters of the apparel merchandising student from Greenburgh, N.Y., who vanished when she was 20.
Spierer was reportedly last seen about 4:30 a.m. on June 3, 2011, at the intersection of 11th Street and College Avenue. It's been reported she was walking home alone toward her Smallwood Plaza apartment after a night out at Kilroy's Sports Bar and 5 North Townhomes.
Bloomington firefighter Lee Chapman says Spierer's mother wrote firefighters a letter thanking them for their efforts to keep Lauren's image prominent in Bloomington.
The firefighters have received donated materials from several local businesses for the billboards, from the framing wood to the white paint. The posters placed in the wooden frames have also been redesigned; the new posters and fliers, also donated.
"If there is a silver lining to the nightmare we have been living since Lauren's disappearance, I would have to say it has been the opportunity to meet so many genuine, caring people from Bloomington who have been unwavering in their support, and committed to helping us in any way they can," Charlene Spierer said.
"To say thank you doesn't seem adequate, but we are so thankful and eternally grateful for the kindness we have been shown," she said.
Members of the Facebook group Putting Up More Posters for Lauren Spierer are inviting the public to meet at 1 p.m. April 28 at the Monroe County Courthouse to distribute new posters and fliers.
