(SALEM) - Washington County Fair is going smoke-free.
Marcia Walker of the Leader-Democrat reports that the decision was made by the Washington County Commissioners during their meeting Tuesday, March 19.
Lindsey Brough, a nurse with the Washington County Health Department, and Rhonda Mills, with the Washington County Tobacco and Cessation Coalition, met with the commissioners and urged them to make the event smoke-free.
Commissioner David Brown said he sits on the fair board and it has been discussed favorably by that group. He suggested including the grandstand.
Brown added that the race track will remain a smoking area.
Although smoke-free, there will be designated smoking areas. Commissioner John Fultz, suggested inviting Morris Lee Day, president of the fair board, to the next commissioners' meeting to determine designated smoking areas.
There is already a state law that prohibits smoking in public buildings and within eight feet of entrances to public buildings.
Enforcement of the smoking ban at the fair was not discussed.
