(PAOLI) - Two workers were injured during an explosion when gasoline fumes ignited in a storage tank at a Paoli service station Monday afternoon.
The names of the two injured men were not available, but both suffered serious burns. They were taken to IU Paoli Hospital and then flown by helicopter to the University of Louisville Hospital
The explosion happened at Riley Oil Company, east of the Orange County Courthouse, at 110 East Main Street just before 3 pm.
Paoli Fire and Rescue Chief Dutch Parks says two men, subcontractors from a company out of Jasonville, were refurbishing a 12,000 gallon fuel storage tank at the business. Then on Monday, they were inside a 1,000 gallon storage tank. Parks says a tanker truck was putting fuel into the 12,000 gallon tank when fumes went over to where the men were working and ignited.
Parks says the fire burned for 90 seconds to 2 minutes before it was put out.
The business was closed while a representative from the State Fire Marshal's office investigated. The official found no damage to the tanks, building or equipment and allowed the business to open.
