(PAOLI) - Two people were arrested Thursday afternoon after fleeing from police and more than 44 grams of meth was discovered.

According to a police news release, officers from the Orange County Sheriff's Department and Indiana State Police arrested:

Michael Andrew Ray, 27, of Marengo, on charges of dealing methamphetamines, a Class A felony; resisting arrest by fleeing in a vehicle, a Class D felony; theft, a Class D felony and carrying a handgun without a permit, a Class A misdemeanor.

Naomi Ruth Stevens, 29, of Memphis, was charged with dealing methamphetamines, a Class A felony; resisting arrest by fleeing in a vehicle, a Class D felony and carrying a handgun without a permit, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to police the officers attempted to stop Ray's vehicle near Unionville Road, about two miles south of Paoli at 2:30 pm.

Ray fled from police south to the Young Creek area down County Road 175 South into Crawford County.

As the couple sped down the road, police saw them throwing things out the window.

Police say the pursuit continued down several county roads until Ray's vehicle ran out of gas.

The car slowed near a farmer's field and Ray and Stevens fled from the car.

ISP Trooper Shane Staggs and Orange County Chief Deputy Josh Babcock chased the couple and apprehended them about 40 yards from the vehicle.

Other officers involved with the pursuit stopped to pick up the items the two threw out the window. They found a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun, narcotics, a hypodermic needle and syringe, and other drug paraphernalia.

After the couple's arrest, officers served a search warrant to obtain a package at the Paoli Post Office.

Inside that package police discovered 44 grams of meth, worth an estimated $50,000 if the drug had been sold on the streets.
