Last updated on Monday, March 4, 2013

(KOKOMO) - Tessa Makximenko, a senior at Bedford North Lawrence High School, ranked among the finalists in the Distinguished Young Woman competition Saturday night.

The event (formerly Junior Miss) started at 7 p.m., featuring 19 contestants. The finalists were announced around 8:30 p.m. Makximenko was one of them.

She won a $500 scholarship, according to Janie Anderson, co-chair for Lawrence County's DYW.

Makximenko, however, did not advance to the top three.

Anderson did say that Makximenko was ecstatic because she did not expect to make it to the finals.

Alexandra Hochstetler of Middlebury placed first and was awarded $7,000 in scholarships.
Ashley Zeiner of Hamilton County, the first runner-up, received $3,000.

Jamah Wilkerson of Jackson County placed third and received $2,000 along with a scholastic award.
