Seymour High School Basketball Coach Fired

Last updated on Saturday, March 16, 2013

(SEYMOUR) - Scott Miller was given the choice to resign from his position as head coach of the Seymour High School boys basketball team or be fired.

Dennis Dunn and Nick Hedrick of The Banner, report, during the 2012-13 season the Owls went 2-19. Miller said his players didn't give up and he appreciated their effort and attitude, and he wasn't going to give up on them.

So he chose not to resign, and Tuesday night the Seymour Community Schools board of trustees unanimously approved the firing of Miller. He will remain as high school social studies teacher through the end of this school year.

The board approved Miller's termination as part of a package of other personnel matters. There was no discussion beforehand and board members did not discuss the search for Miller's replacement.

Team members, including Miller's son, Logan, attended the board meeting to support their coach.

As his teammates looked on, Logan Miller said they respectfully disagreed with the board's decision. Despite the team's record, he said, the players gave their best effort and were encouraged by the community's support.
After Miller finished speaking, the audience applauded as the team left the room.

Later in the meeting, board member Jeff Joray thanked Scott Miller for his coaching services.
Miller, who guided the Owls for 12 years, ended with a 123-132 record at Seymour and had four winning seasons. His first year was the 2001-2002 season where the Owls were 10-11. In 18 years as a head coach Miller is 206-185.

Miller helped coach the Owls to a 16-7 record in 2004-05 where they lost to Jennings County 54-52 in the sectional finals. In the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons the Owls finished with identical 15-7 records.
