(BLOOMINGTON) - Throughout April, the City of Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD) is helping Rhino’s Youth Center celebrate its 20th year as a creative resource for teenagers with a retrospective of screen-printed posters that will be on display for the month of April at City Hall, 401 N. Morton St.
Featuring the work of both current participants and alumni, the collection showcases the unconventional creative spirit that makes Rhino's a unique asset to our community.
Rhino's, a division of the Harmony Education Center, provides free after-school media programming to teens in visual art, journalism, radio, music and video production, and screen printing, which has been the program's specialty. Rhino's also serves as a venue for youth art shows and musical performances.
The exhibit will be on display in April from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as additional evening and weekend hours when City Hall is open for meetings. A public reception for the exhibit will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on April 4 in the atrium at City Hall and will include a musical performance by local band and Rhino's alumni, Busman's Holiday.
Since its inception, the Rhino's art programs have taught hundreds of kids how to express themselves using this medium. Rhino's is supported through a partnership among Harmony Education Center, the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, The Voice - The Indiana Youth Anti-Tobacco Movement and WFHB Community Radio.
According to the 2012 Americans for the Arts study, Bloomington's nonprofit arts sector contributes $72.3 million to the local economy annually through direct spending by arts organizations and their audiences. For more information on the study visit www.bloomington.in.gov/arts.
