Paoli Furniture Honored For Safety

Last updated on Monday, March 25, 2013

(ORLEANS) - Paoli Furniture in Orleans has been named a recipient of the 2013 Governor’s Workplace Safety Award by Gov. Mike Pence.

The honor came during the Governor's Safety and Health Conference and Expo luncheon ceremony hosted by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Commissioner Sean M. Keefer, from the Department of Labor.

The event took place at the Indiana Convention Center.

Ellspermann spoke to the crowd, saying "Dedication to a safe work environment should be an absolute goal of every Indiana employer. I commend our award winners for successfully implementing significant health and safety practices."

Keefer told the crowd, "The Indiana Department of Labor is proud to recognize Paoli Furniture. The safety and health of their workforce is their top priority. They represent the best of the best and Indiana is proud to honor their employees."

The Indiana Governor's Workplace Safety Award is a partnership between the governor's office, the Indiana Department of Labor, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and the American Society of Safety Engineers to advance the safety, health and prosperity of Hoosiers in the workplace.

"In 2012 our injury rate was 91 percent below the national average for our industry," said Deanna Babcock, the plant's safety and health specialist. "We are not perfect by any means, but we want the best for all of our members (employees) and their families so we keep striving for improvement each day."

Safety Director Jerry Roach said, "Safety truly is our top priority at Paoli. Normally, safety is not the first thing that workers think about until there is an injury, because almost everyone comes to work with the same attitude, which is 'I am not going to get injured today' or 'It won't happen to me', and with that type of thinking the potential for injuries is much greater ... At Paoli ,we truly want to make sure that each member goes home to their families at night the same way they came to work."
