(MITCHELL) - Mitchell's Eddie McLain is looking for sponsors and volunteers for the Mitchell Freedom Festival July 6.
The festival will feature events that would surround the city's annual fireworks show.
A organizational meeting will be held at the First Christian Church at 8th and Frank streets in Mitchell on next Monday at 7 p.m.
"This can be a creative way for organizations to raise funds" McLain says. "And everyone profits, the organization and the community."
The plan, McLain says, is to use the "captive audience" that attends the fireworks show each year and give them something more, while raising money to support the show and Mitchell athletics.
"50 percent of the profits will go back to the city to cover the cost of the fireworks and 50 percent will be used for Mitchell youth athletics to cover the cost of athletic equipment," McLain says.
The event, Mitchell Freedom Fest, would be conducted at Lehigh Field on July 6. The one-day festival would include a flea market, 5K run/walk, kick ball tournament, bicycle rodeo, bicycle race and ride, a punt, pass and kick competition, a motorcycle parade and a battle of the bands contest.
Then, following a full day of events, Mitchell's Fourth of July fireworks will light up the night sky.
But to do that McLain says he needs volunteers and sponsors for the events.
"Right now we have a group of six to eight volunteers," McLain says. "I would like to see that group turn into 40 or more volunteers. It don't cost anything to help just a little of your time. We need sponsors, warm bodies, brains, and doers."
McLain doesn't want outside vendors serving food and making money off the event.
Instead, he wants local religious, civic and sports groups to be able to use the festival as a fundraiser by selling food, drinks and other products.
"I want Mitchell groups and organizations to pull together and come out and raise funds for their organizations while helping out the community," McLain says.
To help out with planning the event, feel free to contact McLain at 278-1317 or attend the meeting on March 11.
