Last updated on Monday, March 4, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The Indiana Bowhunters Association (IBA) has named Indiana Conservation Officer Chad Mills as the recipient of the 2013 IBA Phil Ohmit Conservation Officer of the Year award.

Mills was nominated by his district commanders for the award. He was chosen by the IBA executive board.

"Mills' selection is an honor because it represents the outstanding efforts of many other dedicated officers throughout Indiana and recognizes one of the greatest conservationists and leaders in the history of the DNR Law Enforcement Division, Phil Ohmit", stated Lt. Colonel Steve Hunter.

Mills has served as an Indiana Conservation Officer for 14 years.

He serves his community as a National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) instructor and also as a dedicated Hunter Education instructor. Mills has taught several archery programs in and around Lawrence County and enjoys a personal passion as a traditional archer. Along with his significant contributions to hunter safety and education, Mills had a successful year enforcing the law and curbing illegal hunting activities in Lawrence County.

Lt. Phil Schuetter stated, "I feel that Officer Mills has earned this award because he had an excellent year in his enforcement duties and has been a dedicated archery educator within his community."

Mills was recognized for his achievements at the 48th annual IBA banquet held on Feb. 23rd. IBA was established in 1965 by a small group of bowhunters with a vision for the future of bowhunters. IBA has grown to become one of the most effective statewide sportsmen's organizations in the country. Past IBA president Gene Hopkins stated, "The Phil Ohmit Conservation Officer of the Year award is one of our most distinguished awards. It is our way to honor the contributions of our conservation law enforcement officers in their efforts to protect our natural resources."

"My family and I are blessed and honored by the tribute the Indiana Bowhunters Association has paid to our hero, Phil Ohmit, by naming their conservation award for him. Phil set the bar for the men and women who serve our state as conservation officers. It is quite evident that Officer Chad Mills has reached that bar. We congratulate and thank him for his dedication and service to the State of Indiana." Judy Ohmit stated. Mills is the first to receive this award since it was renamed.

"We are grateful that IBA has chosen to honor such deserving members of our organization." Lt. Col. Hunter stated.
