North Lawrence Superintendent Dennis Turner To Retire July 1

Last updated on Monday, March 25, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Dennis Turner, superintendent of the North Lawrence Community Schools, announced that he would retire effective July 1.

In a written statement Turner referenced an old hymn, "Count Your Blessings."

"As I recount my 27 years in NLCS, I am overwhelmed by the blessings I can count," Turner wrote. "When I add students and personnel, along with parents and community advocates for kids and strong schools, my blessings are in the thousands and thousands."

He said he has "endeavored to honor, in my work at NLCS, the life of my late brother, Mark Turner, who possessed a special gift of getting kids to believe in themselves and achieve above expectations. Mark and I were blessed to have a mom and dad, Frank and Mona Turner, who loved us and who set high expectations of behavior. They never miss a day of praying for me and for NLCS, and I am convinced that anything of merit in Mark's work or mine is attributable to them."

He also expressed thanks for the support of his wife, Melody.

Turner's statement also praised the hard work of teachers and staff members in the North Lawrence schools.

"They produce miracles every day for children and young people, and I have had the world-class privilege of seeing the beauty of their work. I have often summarized the effect of a good education in that it can cause a youngster to ask, 'I wonder what is on the other side of that hill or around that curve or beyond that horizon?'"

The statement continued, "As it now becomes my turn to 'wonder what is on the other side of the hill, or around the curve or beyond the horizon,' I can testify with conviction that my life is blessed and better because of NLCS."
