More Than $750,000 For Tornado Assistance

Last updated on Sunday, March 10, 2013

(WASHINGTON COUNTY) - Some 25 Washington County families recovering from the March 2 tornado have received assistance through the Washington County Community Foundation.

Marcia Walker, of the Salem Leader reports, Judy Johnson, the foundation's executive director, said a total of $759,979 has been distributed. That breaks down to $178,330 from the foundation; $49,524 that was obtained from other funders and $532,493 from March 2 Recovery.

Johnson said that amount was what was spent in Washington County and helped with the costs of a variety of projects, including installation of septic systems, rebuilding houses, making repairs to gutters, replacing roofs, replacing decks on mobile homes, replacing windows, replacing siding and replacing mobile homes.

She explained that those assisted were either uninsured or under-insured.

"They have contacted March 2 Recovery," Johnson said. "They were assigned a case manager. The case manager worked with them to resolve their needs."

The 25 families do not represent everyone who has been assisted, Johnson added. Some people who received a helping hand didn't reach that level, such as families who needed smaller items, such as supplies that had been donated, items that didn't require cash outlay or minimal cash outlay.

Construction projects were monitored by a construction manager.

"There was a construction person to oversee everything," Johnson said. "These (projects) are at different stages of completion."

Johnson said donors were told that every penny donated to the foundation for tornado relief would be spent in the county and it was.

Johnson expects all the projects to be completed within the next five to six months. And still to be determined is the number of volunteer hours people donated to the effort.

She added that once all the projects have been completed, there will be a complete report that includes the number of volunteer hours.
