(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell Junior High dance team, in its first appearance at the state finals took the state championship trophy.
On Friday and Saturday, members of the Mitchell Junior-Senior High School dance teams traveled to New Castle High School for the Indiana High School Dance Team Association finals.
Both squads qualified for the event after spending the winter competing in invitational and regional competitions.
The high school team, comprised of 11 girls and coached by Michelle Jones, placed fourth in the elite kick category and eighth in the elite jazz category.
The junior high team, comprised of 15 girls and coached by Erica Slaughter, placed first in the novice jazz category with its dubstep remix, "Bittersweet Symphony."
The junior high team competed against 11 teams at the finals.
