Last updated on Friday, March 1, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The Live Well Lawrence County Challenge, sponsored by the Lawrence County Economic Growth Council and numerous community partners, will launch this weekend.

Sara Kuhl of the Times-Mail reports that this is the third year for Live Well, a county-wide health and wellness challenge.

The six-week challenge will kick off with free baseline health checks at 10 a.m. Saturday and from 5:30-7 p.m. March 5 at the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce conference room, 1116 16th St.

Teams are designated as competitive or participating. Competitive team members pay $25 per person, while participating team members can enjoy the benefits of the program at no charge.

Competitive team members receive Live Well T-shirts, and teams are eligible to compete for the $500 team prize and trophies.

The winning non-competitive team also will win a team trophy and possibly $50.
Teams must have at least two participants. Each team must choose a team leader and team name.

Registration forms are available at the chamber office and online at www.facebook.com/livewellchallenge

Individual members will select one exercise goal and two nutrition goals to meet daily or weekly, track their points and report to the team leaders.

Team leaders will then monitor, record and report the members' progress as they work toward their personal goals.

Healthy meal demonstrations will be presented by Purdue University Extension's Bethany Daugherty at Live Well's weekly meetings at 6 p.m. each Tuesday.

Local fitness, stress management and nutritional professionals also will speak about and demonstrate a variety of health and fitness programs during the meetings.

Throughout the challenge, participating local organizations -- including fitness centers and Hoosier National Forest - will honor Live Well punch cards that allow team members free visits and services.

The challenge will take a hiatus during the local schools' spring break and will conclude April 20.

The Live Well 5K Walk/Run will begin at 9 a.m. April 27 at Brian Lane Way followed by a 1-mile Fun Run at 10:30 a.m.

On April 30, the Live Well awards program will cap the challenge.
