Lee And Schlegel Win DAR Good Citizen Scholarship

(BEDFORD) - The John Wallace Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors the DAR Good Citizens Program and the Indiana DAR and NSDAR Good Citizen Scholarship Program at Bedford North Lawrence High School and Mitchell High School each year.

The qualities of a DAR Good Citizen are dependability service to community and others, leadership and patriotism. The scholarship portion consists of a written essay.

The winners of this year's scholarship are Jocelyn E. Schlegel of MHS and Michael Evan Lee of BNL.

Lee is the son of Sarah Lee and the late Robert E. Lee. He is a member of National Honor Society and has been active on the BNL Student Council for four years and currently serves as president. He has participated in soccer, track and field and swimming. He is in the BNL orchestra and choir and has held roles in school musicals. He attended Hoosier Boys State and has been a scholar athlete and on the National Honor Roll.

He is very active in the First Presbyterian Church and is the youth elder. As a result of his work, attendance has increased in the youth programs. Lee has been a volunteer for Special Olympics, Glory Days and the Area Wide College Fair. He enjoys Brazilian jiu-jitsu and is an active member of Between the Crowd, an independent youth group.
Lee has worked at the John Lowery Municipal Pool, Tropical Snow and does lawn care.
He plans to pursue a degree in either business or informatics and participate in the Air Force ROTC program.

Schlegel is the daughter of Vicky Schlegel. At Mitchell High School, she is president of Student Council, SADD and National Honor Society and is a member of the French Club, Tri-Hi-Y, Key Club and Fresh Start. She was team captain of the volleyball team for two years and was named all conference in track for two years. Schlegel is a Scholastic "M" winner and has been on the honor roll numerous times. She was the first runner-up in Lawrence County's Distinguished Young Woman program.

She has organized coats drives for a local church and volunteers at a local food pantry and thrift store. She organized a community-wide event to support a student in the school system with leukemia. Schlegel has participated in Orange County Players productions and gymnastics. She was also on the swim team. She was active in a church youth group and has been a Bible camp counselor.

Schlegel plans to attend Indiana University Southeast and would like to be a nurse practitioner.

The DAR Good Citizens from both high schools will be honored at 6 p.m. Awards Banquet on March 19 at the First Christian Church, 1101 15th St. The Bedford. American History Essay winners will also be recognized.
