(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Department of Community and Family Resources, IU Health Bloomington and the Monroe County Health Department will sponsor free health screenings and provide health education information in recognition of National Public Health Week, which begins April 1.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 6, and will be held in the atrium at City Hall., 401 N. Morton St.

Available health services will include blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), A1C (diabetes, non-fasting) and HIV/STI tests as well as depression and spinal screenings. Exhibitors include the Monroe/Greene County WIC, the Active Living Coalition, G.O.A.L. Weight Management, Individual Solutions, the Monroe County Health Department, Volunteers in Medicine and the Monroe County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Light refreshments will be served.

In 1995, President Bill Clinton proclaimed the first full week of April as National Public Health Week. Each year since then, the public health community has celebrated this observance by focusing on issues that are important to improving the public's health. The theme for this year's National Public Health Week is "Public Health is ROI: Save Lives, Save Money." Successful public health programs result in healthier communities and reduced disease treatment costs, which means better economic productivity and an improved quality of life.

Well-supported public health systems are critical to the nation's health and future. They not only maintain the health victories we have accomplished so far, such as dramatic reductions in tobacco use, but also are essential to confronting today's big problems, such as rising chronic disease rates. Public health programs rally communities around the many social determinants that shape people's health. The future of public health is empowering communities with the tools, knowledge, resources and opportunities to make lasting change.
