Courthouse Hours Could Change

Last updated on Wednesday, March 13, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The commissioners are considering changing the courthouse hours.

Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig asked the commissioners to consider changing the hours because currently some of the courthouse officers are open till 4:30 pm while some close at 4 pm.

Craig says because of the new security issues being put in place, it would help with scheduling an officer to be on duty when the courthouse is open.

The employees were polled and they requested the courthouse be open from 8 am to 4 pm

However Commissioner Dave Flinn would like to see the courthouse open from 8:30 am till 4:30 pm.

"I am disappointed," Flinn says. "I think this backfired. Many residents work till 4 pm and csn not get off to come do business at the courthouse. Staying open till 4:30 would allow them time to get off work and get to the courthouse to take care of their business."

The commissioners decided to table the issue for now so they could discuss their options.

In other business:

* Project Manager Bob Dillon told the commissioners, construction will begin on county bridge 75, April 1. The bridge is located on Dunn Bridge Road.

"Two of the primary girders on the north end had buckled," he explained. "The county did install bracing on one of the beams, but we had to drop the load limit from 12 tons to six tons."

Dillon says the project will take about six to eight weeks to complete depending on the weather.

* Kenneth and Shelley Goben were on the agenda to ask permission to vacate roadways in Lawrenceport. However they did not show up for the meeting.
But a group of Lawrenceport residents did.

"Everyone in Lawrenceport are happy with how things are there now," said Sharon McCoy. "He is the only one down there that is not. We are here to voice the concern of several in Lawrenceport. Many could not be here this morning because they are at work."

Commissioner Bill Spreen says there was some confusion on what exactly the Goben family was asking the commissioners to do. But since he was not there to answer questions, his request was tabled.

* The commissioners heard from Dan Rininger and Mark Heirbrandt, of Ameresco Indiana Energy Savings Program.

Heirbrantdt would like to look at county owned facilities and do an utility analysis to see if they can make improvements to the facility saving taxpayers money on utility bills.
The commissioners took the information under advisement.

* Sheriff Sam Craig reported there were 120 inmates in the county jail. Of those 22 were female and 13 were Department of Correction holds.

* County Coroner Rob Herr asked permission to purchase a washer and drier for the county morgue. The quote for the standard washing machine and drier was from $1,311.19 and will be purchased locally.

Herr also told the commissioners the morgue is official open.

* Clerk Myron Rainey asked permission to move the Voter Registration office from its current location to the former plat office in the basement of the courthouse. Rainey requested the move because after the courthouse security check point is established it could interfere with easy access to the office. Sheriff Sam Craig agreed and the commissioners approved the move.

* Highway Supervisor Dave Holmes says crews are continuing to do shoulder work on county roads.
