Cody Umphress And Kaci Nicholson To Hike Appalachian Trail

(BEDFORD) -26-year-old Cody Umphress of Bedford is going to hike the entire Appalachian Trail, all 2,185 miles of it, to "Walk off the War" with 12 other veterans.

The Times-Mail reports, Umphress was deployed to Iraq in November 2006 and came home in January 2008

He, with his girlfriend, Kaci Nicholson, will start the walk from Georgia to Maine Sunday. Their good friend Gary Ewin of Bunker Hill, Ill., also a veteran, is hiking with them. Marine Corps Capts.

Mark Silvers and Sean Gobin founded the Warrior Hike and partnered with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to create the Walk off the War Program, a nonprofit where veterans hike the Appalachian Trail to raise donations for wounded veterans and soldiers who need specialized vehicles, wheelchairs, and other items.

During their first hike, the two founders organized 35 fundraisers at various veteran organizations along the trail and raised $50,000 by the end of it. Bedford business, Good Sports, is sponsoring the couple's hike.
