Budget Cuts Cancel Tornado Spotter's Course In Bloomfield

Last updated on Wednesday, March 13, 2013

(BLOOMFIELD) - Greene County Emergency Management Agency Director Roger Axe is disappointed that federal budget cuts have forced the cancellation of a local Tornado Spotter’s Course sponsored by the National Weather Service.

Nick Schneider, of the Greene County Daily World reports, Axe said in a prepared news release that he was informed that the class in Greene County was not going to be conducted this year.

Instead, the National Weather Service will host regional conferences. There is a regional course planned in Sullivan on Thursday night, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Sullivan Junior High School and another at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Spencer at the Christian Church located at Montgomery and Market streets.

Axe said not having a Greene County course leaves a void because trained weather spotters on the ground are important.

Last year's course at the Greene County Fairgrounds had a standing-room-only crowd.

Axe says it is especially tragic because interest has increased due to the tornado at Henryville last year.
