(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man had blood on his hand as he entered the Bloomington Police Department to turn himself in for a homicide he claimed he committed.

Although Sgt. Joseph Crider says police could not find any evidence the 55-year-old man had committed a crime, his confession led to an investigation.

Tuesday afternoon the man entered the police department and told the front desk clerk he had murdered someone. His hands were covered in blood. The man then fled the building. Officers followed locating him near the intersection of Third and Washington streets.

The man was armed with a pocket knife. After investigating, police determined the blood on the man's hands was his own after finding a laceration on the man's head. After questioning the man police determined there was no crime committed, but the man's erratic statements led them to believe he was having homicidal thoughts. So he was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for a mental evaluation.
