(BROWNSTOWN) - Brownstown/Ewing Main Street is planning a benefit concert to raise funds for an ongoing restoration project.
Larry McDonald's "This Old Guitar" band will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 12 at W.R. Ewing, 1105 W. Spring St., Brownstown. Tickets can be purchased from BEMS members or Ewing Uniques and Family Drug in Brownstown and This Old Guitar and Bevers Pharmacy in Seymour.
BEMS, a volunteer-based organization devoted to developing and preserving Brownstown and Ewing's downtown areas, plans to renovate the historic Ewing railroad depot into a visitor's center and museum.
CSX Railroad, the depot's previous owners, donated the property to the town of Brownstown, which delegated the restoration project to BEMS. Organization members need to raise $25,000 to move the depot away from the railroad tracks.
So far, BEMS has collected $3,915. At a March 7 planning meeting, area realtor Mike Kopp -- who has consulted BEMS through establishing its non-profit status -- donated $500 and challenged BEMS and community members to match or exceed his contribution.
This Old Guitar is known for both original songs and cover versions of 1960s, 1970s and current hits.
"We're hoping he has a large following," said BEMS member Darlene Butt.
Attendees are welcome to bring their own refreshments to the concert. Pizza slices and cans of soda will also be available for $1.
The concert is one of two fundraisers BEMS is planning for the depot project. Artsfest is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 27 in Brownstown and Ewing, followed at 7:30 p.m. by a performance of the comedy-drama "Catfish Moon" at Jackson County Community Theater.
For more information or to help the organization with the fundraisers, call McDonald at 812-524-8986, Wilma J. Wessel at 812-358-2199 or Butt at 812-525-8692.
Tax-deductible donations can be made by sending a check to the Community Foundation of Jackson County specifying the Ewing Depot Fund, P.O. Box 1231, 107 Community Drive, Seymour, Ind. 47274.
