Bedford Woman Dies In Crash Near Cloverdale

Last updated on Wednesday, March 6, 2013

(CLOVERDALE) - A Bedford woman was killed when her car slid into the path of a semi-tractor and trailer Tuesday night near Cloverdale.

An Indiana State Police news release reports, 36-year-old Tiffany Ann Mikel, was driving a 2000 Pontiac and was attempting to merge onto Interstate 70 from the 41-mile marker westbound on-ramp. Police say the road surface was snowy and icy and that Mikel's vehicle was moving too fast for the road conditions as she attempted to merge into traffic. Mikel lost control of the vehicle, which spun in the road.

The truck driver, Efren Barragan-Sanchez, 41, Mexico, attempted to slow down, but there was not enough space to do so.

"The semi struck the vehicle on the driver side, in a T-bone fashion, sending the passenger car into the median," the release read. In attempting to brake, Barragan-Sanchez lost control of the truck and crashed into a guardrail on the north side of the road. He did not suffer injuries in the crash, which happened just before 5:30 p.m.

Interstate 70 was completely shut down for about 15 minutes, the news release reported. Westbound I-70 was restricted to one lane thereafter for about the next three hours while investigators completed their work.

Police said that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the crash. The Putnam County Sheriff's Department, the Cloverdale Police Department and the Cloverdale Fire and Operation Life Medics assisted ISP at the accident scene.
