(BEDFORD) - The City of Bedford Board of Works and Safety during a special meeting Monday afternoon, opened quotes for 29 laptop computers for the Bedford Police Department the computers are needed to be compatible with their new Spillman system.
The city received four quotes and the winner one was submitted by CDW-G, of Chicago.
However, Todd Thomas, of TNT Computer, in Bedford, voiced concern during the meeting. He says the letter sent out by BPD Chief Dennis Parsley stated the city was seeking local bids for the computers.
"If I had known CDW-G was bidding I would not have wasted 9 hours of my time preparing the quote," Thomas says. "CDW-G is like the Wal-Mart for computers and there is no way a local firm can compete with them."
Parsley apologized for the mix-up.
"At the time I sent out the letters I didn't know anything about CDW-G," Parsley told Thomas. "I apologize for that, it was my oversight."
The quotes for the computers were as follows:
CDW-G for $85,926.70
Bedford Office Supply for $98,367.29
TNT Computers for $100,380.25
Hoosier PC Corp. for $104,216.12
The board also opened quotes for the Harp Commons project Plan Director Dan Kirk says city leaders are busy formulating plans for Harp Commons, an anchor of the city's downtown revitalization plan.
Earlier this year, the city acquired the pocket park via a property exchange with Bedford Revitalization Inc. The city, BRI and Helix Technologies, secured a $50,000 grant to revitalize Harp Commons, the small pocket park along J Street on the downtown square.
The city received two quotes for backhoe work, hauling material and fill dirt and for compaction of the fill dirt. The winning quote was received from H&H Construction in Bedford.
"We have a committee working to get the park ready for activities," Kirk says. "The idea is to attract more people downtown by hosting a lot of events downtown."
Utilities Director Misty Adams also asked the board to waive the penalty fees for March utility bills.
The new storm water rates were on the March bill and Adams says, some of the bills needed minor corrections and were sent out late.
"Because of that we just feel it is right to waive the penalty fees for this month," Adam says.
