(INDIANAPOLIS) -An Indianapolis woman, formerly of Pekin, has been arrested and charged with OWI causing death, a Class C felony, after police said her vehicle was in a fatal collision early Sunday with a taxi.

The Indianapolis Fire Department said two cars -- the woman's Jeep Cherokee and a white Chevrolet Impala LT owned by Taxi West -- collided at the intersection of Delaware and Washington streets downtown at about 3:17 a.m. Authorities say Gettys drove through a red light, crashing into the cab.

The driver of the taxi, 32-year-old Semere Issak, was killed. When police and fire crews arrived, the taxi was on the sidewalk at the north corner of the intersection, and the driver of the Jeep Cherokee, 23-year-old Whitney Gettys, was inside a nearby business.

Gettys appeared disoriented and had trouble finding her driver's license in her purse, but told police she was injured, according to a police report. The officer speaking to Gettys said he smelled alcohol on her breath.

Gettys was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police spokesman Linda Jackson said there was no breath test, but Gettys was taken to the hospital for a blood draw. Those results are not yet immediately available.
