Last updated on Wednesday, February 13, 2013

(BEDFORD) - A concerned Shawswick Middle School student alerted officials after they believed a student had a weapon at the school dance.

According to Shawswick Principal Jim Pentzer, the student just saw a handle and wasn't sure if it could have been a gun.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department was called and discovered that it was not a gun, but the handle of a pocketknife the student saw.

Pentzer, says there were some threats made at the dance and school officials are handling the situation and no further comment could be made about the incident because of student privacy requirements.

School officials notified parents of the incident Monday through the school corporation's automated telephone system.
