(BLOOMINGTON) - A Solsberry man was sentenced to 14 years after causing the death of Gwendolynn Sanders.
Laura Lane of the Herald Times reports that Sanders was driving a taxi early the morning of July 20, 2010, when Bryce Leighton, intoxicated and behind the wheel of a stolen car on the wrong side of the road, crashed head-on into her Yellow Cab.
The 31-year-old Bedford woman, mother of a 3-year-old son, died at the scene. Leighton, now 23, was seriously injured.
Tuesday, Monroe Circuit Judge Kenneth Todd handed Leighton a 14-year prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to causing a death while driving a vehicle with a blood-alcohol content above .15 and auto theft.
Police reported Leighton's BAC after the crash was .23, almost three times the legal limit for intoxication in Indiana.
According to police reports, Leighton had been at a party on Leonard Springs Road and was asked to leave. He did so, and took off in a woman's Pontiac Grand Prix without her permission
He struck the cab in the 2700 block of South Leonard Springs Road, according to a probable cause affidavit. The accident happened after Leighton reportedly passed a car on a double yellow line and crested a hill, crashing into Sanders' cab at full speed.
