Protesters Gather In Kirkwood Hall

Last updated on Saturday, February 9, 2013

(BLOOMINGTON0 - Protesters gathered in the lobby of Kirkwood Hall twice Thursday night.

They gathered to protest tuition hikes and student debt.

IU Police Department officers were present and told the protestors they could not play music in the building because they did not have a permit. The officers asked the protestors to leave the building, who then went outside and later returned in the building.

"We never actually left," Aidan Crane, senior and opinion columnist for the Indiana Daily Student said. "We set up some tables outside with literature."

IUPD Sgt. Chad Bennett, said protestors usually leave when IUPD shows up, and if the protestors showed up again, IUPD would likely show up a third time.

"We may do something different (a third time) between their response of us arriving," Bennett said.

Crane said the event was a rallying place for people to come together.

"The event was intended to build support and morale for the strike in April, to serve as an example for students taking back places in their university outside the regulations and hierarchy to set up by an administration," Crane said.

Crane also said the event was set up to serve as an example for what the University could be, a place of free expression and creation is it wasn't fettered by the heavy handedness of the administrations.

The strike to protest student debt is scheduled for April 11 and 12.
