Last updated on Tuesday, February 12, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Indiana Lions honored Jack Voigtschild with a W.P. Wood Fellowship, the highest award given by the state organization to a member of Lions.

At the Feb. 6 meeting of the Bedford Noon Lions Club, District Gov. Brenda Lawson presented the award, pin and certificate to Voigtschild, saying that his nomination had been approved by the state Lions council for his "outstanding service in his community."

Noon Lions President Rita Kersh says she had nominated Voigtschild for his active work in recruiting and retaining Lions members as well as for his community help, especially during emergencies.

Voigtschild is director of emergency services for the local Salvation Army and as a member of the Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department. He is also chairman of the District Lions Disaster Committee. He is chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, chaplain for IU Health Bedford Hospital, the Lawrence County Police, and DNR Law Enforcement. He serves on the board for Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living and is a member of the Free Methodist Church.

He and his wife Sherry are the parents of two sons, Brett and Brian, and they have five grandchildren.

W.P. Wood, the man for whom the award is named, was from Evansville and was the first president of Lions International.

Woods began forming new Lions clubs as early as 1915 for the purpose of starting a community-service-oriented organization, according to a history of Lions.

On Jan. 18, 1916, the Austin, Texas, Lions Club (today's oldest continuously operating Lions club) was chartered by E.A. Hicks of Indiana on behalf of Woods, the history reports.
