IU Health Bedford To Offer Free Mammography Screenings

Last updated on Friday, February 8, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Indiana University Health Bedford has received a grant from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust for one year.

A mammogram is one of the best tools for the early detection of breast cancer and life-saving early detection.

IU Health Bedford will offer 38 free digital mammography screenings to women who are 35-65 years of age, live in Lawrence County and who are not insured or have a low income.

This grant will allow mammograms to many women who otherwise might not receive this potentially lifesaving screening and education.

Funding for grants such as the mammograms, are made possible through the sales of the Indiana breast cancer awareness license plate.

Since the plate became available in 2002, more than $2 million has been distributed to organizations throughout the state for screening mammography services not otherwise available to medically underserved populations in Indiana.

All Indiana residents may purchase an Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness license plate by visiting their local Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch of the BMV website at www.in.gov/bmv.

If you or someone you know needs a screening mammogram and meets the criteria, please contact IU Health Cancer Services at (812) 275-1295.
