(GREENE COUNTY) - Greene County has two newly crowned Miss Flames.
Nick Schneider of the Greene County Daily World reports that Jesse McDonald, a junior at White River Valley High School, was crowned Miss Flame for District 17A of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association in a ceremony Sunday.
She is the daughter of Russle and Michaele McDonald, of rural Lyons.
Jesse is representing the Lyons-Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department where her dad is a member.
Darion Wilson, a senior at Shakamak High School, was also named Miss Flame for District 11A of the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association on Sunday.
Darion is the daughter of Nolan G. Wilson and the late Julie Franklin Wilson, of rural Linton.
She is a junior firefighter on Wright Township Fire Department at Midland.
Wilson plans to take her fire training as soon as she turns 18 so she can join the department as a regular firefighter.
She was representing the Wright Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The District 11A competition was conducted at Plumbers and Steamfitters in Seelyville.
Both McDonald and Wilson will participate at the state competition in June at Muncie during the IVFA State Convention.
Olivia Sparks, the daughter of Linton Fire Department Chief Brad Sparks and his wife, Tami, was the first runner-up in the competition.
She is a junior at Linton-Stockton High School and was representing the Turman Township Volunteer Fire Department in Sullivan County, where her dad is a member and assists with training.
Both of the District 11A finalists have strong firefighter family backgrounds.
Wilson's dad is assistant chief of Wright Township. Her grandfather, Nolan (Jack) Wilson, is the current chief of Wright Township Fire Department.
She also has aunts, uncles and cousins, who are firefighters, and her brother just became old enough and joined as a junior firefighter, all on the Wright Township department.
Sparks' grandfather, Wendall Sparks, is retired from the Linton Fire Department, where he served for 31 years, including about two years as chief before retiring in 2003. Her other grandfather, Jack Allen, held the fire chief's post in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
